J J Roy Burman graduate in Anthropology from Calcutta University and did his Masters in Sociology and Social Anthropology from North Bengal University, Darjeeling, and Ph.D. at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. As a Research Fellow of the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, Chandigarh, he did a study on Counter-insurgency problems in Mizoram in 1981.
