Also, he worked as Governor (as an additional charge) of the state of Rajasthan. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, from 1999 to 2004. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award. He died on August 24, 2016, in New Delhi. He was advisory board member of AEEF, and also connected with Shabbir memorial education trust.
