INTRODUCTION
The Assam Mission field was established in the year 2000 by the Mizoram Presbyterian
Church Synod for the specific purpose of effectuating religious conversions among major
communities of Assam.
AMF has divided Assam into four divisions for conversion activities -
- Dibrugarh Pastorate (for upper Assam)
- Tezpur Pastorate (for middle Assam and the northern bank)
- Guwahati Pastorate (for lower Assam)
- Silchar Pastorate (for Barak valley)
AMF is always headed by Mizo officials forming the top brass, followed by a team of community agents made mostly of recent converts from various local ethnic communities. These local community agents serve as ears and eyes of their superior Mizo officers and constantly stalk potential new converts, vulnerable families and localities. These Mizo officers manning the pastorates and the field headquarters undergo a year-long training at the missionary training college, Aizawl, where young officers to be deputed in various field missions, such as Assam Mission field, Jharkhand Mission Field, Arunachal Mission field etc are taught the local language. Like in the case of Mizo officials to be deputed to AMF are taught to speak, write and read Assamese before being deputed to the state. [1]
According to the AMF, the current conversion rate in Assam is at 34% i;e for every 100 people that AMF approaches to Convert/Baptise, around 34 people are successfully converted. AMF believes the present Christian population to be around 12% and has set a target to reach 24% Christian conversion by 2040 in Assam. Communications in various Mizo groups depict that personnel from Mizo Armed police are also deployed in various pastorates as civilians to assist in AMF's work.[1] One person named Vanlalrohawnga Roteavanchhawng, personnel of Mizoram Armed Police is allegedly deployed in Mizo Church Guwahati, HQ of Assam Mission Field to aid in the conversion activities in Assam region.
