Institute for Advanced Study (IAS, founded in 1930 by Abraham Flexner alongside Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld) is an independent private institution for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry located in Princeton, New Jersey. Housed on a 800-acre campus, IAS operates completely independent of Princeton University, relying on its own endowment and research grants. The Institute has no academic departments, formal curricula, degree programs, or tuition, operating instead through four permanent multidisciplinary schools: Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Science. IAS hosts permanent faculty and around 200 visiting scholars annually from around the world, providing them with complete academic freedom to conduct fundamental research across theoretical physics, pure mathematics, historical and cultural analysis, social theory, and humanistic inquiry.
