IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES

1. The "Proxy" Allegations

In late 2025, several mainstream Christian groups (CNI, Catholic, and the National Christian League) held press conferences in Chandigarh. They explicitly labeled Gaurav a "proxy" for Ankur Narula, claiming he uses the government commission to protect the ministry's interests rather than serving the wider minority community (Muslims, Jains, and traditional Christians).[1]

2. Appointment Challenged in Court

A petition filed by Johnson (Amritsar resident) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court (notice issued Nov 2025) calls the appointment arbitrary, politically motivated, and violative of the Punjab State Commission for Minorities Act, 2012. It argues Gaurav lacks the required "eminence" and outstanding work in safeguarding minorities. Critics highlight his limited formal education (described as Class X or even 8th pass) and background in faith-healing rather than administrative or advocacy expertise suited for the role. The petition claims it violates equality provisions under the Constitution.[2]

3. Links to Pentecostal Expansion and Conversions

He is tied to the rapid growth of Pentecostal churches in Punjab, often criticized for aggressive evangelism, "miracle" healing claims, and alleged conversions (especially among Dalit/Scheduled Caste communities). Groups like Punjab Bachao Morcha have demanded his removal, pushed for an anti-conversion law, and accused such ministries of using faith healing for conversions. They announced legal action and rewards for evidence of irregularities.[3]

4. Association with controversial Pentecostal pastors

His association with Ankur Narula places him amid wider scrutiny of Pentecostal pastors in Punjab, including income tax/ED raids on properties, money laundering probes, and criminal cases involving other high-profile pastors. Reports describe these as "self-styled" pastors gaining political influence, with churches sometimes adopting local cultural elements (e.g., resembling gurdwaras) to attract followers. Sikh and indigenous groups have raised alarms about "Punjabisation" of Christianity and demographic shifts.[4] He is also linked to large-scale faith-healing, exorcism, and prayer events through Ankur Narula Ministries and Global Christian Action Committee. Critics accused such ministries of using "miracle cures" for aggressive or fraudulent conversions, especially targeting Dalit/Scheduled Caste communities.[4]

5. Question over Qualifications and Merit

Public criticism focuses on his educational background and experience, questioning suitability for a statutory commission role that requires handling sensitive minority issues impartially.[5]

6. Selective targeting of individuals

As Chairman of Punjab state Minorities Commission, Jatinder Masih Gaurav has filed police complaints against individuals and figures, including Hindu preacher Bageshwar Dham Baba Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, for alleged derogatory remarks against Christianity. Critics view this activism as selective and escalatory, arguing it heightens religious tensions in Punjab’s sensitive multi-faith environment.[6]

7. Valmiki Ashram Visit Controversy in May 2025

Jatinder Masih Gaurav, who comes from a Balmiki (Valmiki) family background in Kalanaur, Gurdaspur district, faced criticism in May 2025 related to his activities linked to Valmiki community sites. Critics (including some Valmiki community voices) accused him of using his Christian ministry influence and government position to influence members of the Valmiki community, seen by some as an attempt to facilitate conversions from the Valmiki fold to Pentecostalism. This added to broader allegations of targeting Dalit communities through faith healing events.[7]
