INTODUCTION

Kripa Foundation was founded in 1981 by Reverend Father Joseph H. Pereira at Mount Carmel Church in Bandra (West), Mumbai. It initially started with a priest, a doctor, a person who had recovered from addiction, and three patients. The foundation's work is to provide holistic rehabilitation to people affected by addiction and HIV/AIDS. Now, Kripa Foundation operates over 70 centers in more than 10 Indian states and maintains international collaborations with organizations in Europe, Canada, and the USA. However, the organisation has also been the subject of critical discussion in media reports. Concerns have been raised about its reinterpretation of yoga within a Christian spiritual framework, which some argue may detach the practice from its original philosophical and cultural roots. There have also been allegations reported in the media regarding ethical issues, including claims questioning links to the alcohol trade, instances of alleged negligence in care at rehabilitation centres, and scrutiny over irregularities in government funding and tender allocation processes. These issues have contributed to ongoing debate around transparency, accountability, and institutional practices within the foundation.

IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES

1. Repackaging Yoga in Christian Garb

Efforts by Father. Joseph Pereira to merge yoga with Christian spirituality risks misrepresenting Yoga’s original purpose and philosophical depth. Reinterpreting it within a Christian framework can be seen as detaching it from these foundational ideas and repackaging it in a way that may not fully respect its origins.

2. Kripa Foundation’s Alleged Links to Alcohol Trade

While Kripa Foundation presents themselves as faith-driven institutions focused on healing addiction through a blend of spirituality and practices like yoga, recent reports have raised ethical concerns that complicate this image. A news report by EastMojo highlights allegations from a recovering addict questioning the foundation’s leadership and its purported links to the alcohol trade, an issue that, if substantiated, would appear deeply contradictory for an institution dedicated to de-addiction and recovery..

3. Death of Inmate due to alleged negligence by Kripa Foundation de-addiction center

Reports such as the one by Mid-Day note that police moved to file a chargesheet against doctors, trustees, and staff linked to Vasai-based Kripa foundation de-addiction centre following the death of an inmate in 2018, raising serious questions about medical care and institutional responsibility. The death of the inmate was allegedly linked to negligence and improper medical care during treatment..

4. HC flags irregularities in 1.03cr tender allocations to Kripa Foundation

The Meghalaya High Court criticised the state government for directly favouring Kripa Foundation in awarding and funding a project to run a juvenile rehabilitation and de-addiction centre, questioning why the organisation was selected without a transparent or competitive process. The court observed that other eligible organisations were not considered and that proper procedures such as open tendering appeared to have been bypassed, raising concerns about arbitrariness and lack of accountability in the allocation of public funds..

5. Claiming Yoga as secular

Joseph Pereira’s framing of yoga as a universal, non-religious practice can be seen as part of a broader pattern where elements of indigenous traditions are reinterpreted and integrated into Christian spiritual frameworks.
