INTRODUCTION

India's electoral landscape witnessed a significant transition from paper ballots to electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the 1990s. The adoption of EVMs not only streamlined the vote counting process but also mitigated environmental impacts associated with paper usage.

The repeated assertion that "EVM is hackable and thus anti-democratic" lacks credible evidence and is often used by various political entities and newly formed Anti-EVM groups to discredit the constitutional bodies responsible for the free and fair electoral process. This narrative aims to sow distrust in democratic institutions that have diligently ensured the smooth functioning of elections. Election commission has repeatedly debunked many claims on EVM reliability. The Supreme Court also ruled in favour of ECI in many petitions on EVM tampering and termed those petitions nonsense. The apex court also fined Madhya Pradesh Jan Vikas Party with ₹50,000 and another petitioner with ₹10,000 in EVM tampering cases. Opposition parties like Congress, AAP, SP, and CPI frequently employ these tactics to deflect from their electoral losses [1]. Consequently, there is a risk of fostering a cynical electorate, disillusioned with the political process and sceptical of election outcomes, which undermines democratic engagement. Individuals such as Mehmood Pracha, Ritu Singh, Prashant Bhushan, Manmohan Mishra, Rahul Mehta, Pragya Mishra, and Abhisar Sharma and Akhilesh Yadav among many others contribute to this narrative, providing fodder for suspicion over the authenticity of EVMs.

Upendra Kushwala (RLSP leader) incited violence against the use of EVM during 2019 Lok Sabha elections, urging his supporters to be ready to pick up weapons to stop the “loot of votes” [2]. Mehmood Pracha who has been vocal against the EVM, threatened Electoral officers to incriminate and punish them in cases [3].
